Sanchez Upholds Spain’s Principled "No to War" Stance

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reaffirmed Madrid’s opposition to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, emphasizing that the government’s "no to war" position is grounded in principles and adherence to international law.

In an interview published Wednesday by a newspaper, Sanchez explained that Spain’s stance reflects a steady and coherent approach to foreign policy, which has garnered recognition beyond its borders.

"When we said 'no to war,' there was a wave of pride in being Spanish not only within our country, but also among many societies across the world," he stated, highlighting the broad support for Spain’s position internationally.

Sanchez dismissed accusations from opposition parties suggesting that the government’s policy was politically motivated for electoral gain. "This war was not provoked by Spain. It was a war driven unilaterally by two nations," he said. "We are not going to resolve the situation of instability in the Middle East with such a flagrant illegality."

Addressing fears of potential US reprisals for Spain’s refusal to back the conflict, Sanchez remarked, "Being an ally of the United States does not mean saying yes to everything." He underscored that Spain’s commitment to international law has consistently shaped its response to crises in regions such as Ukraine and Gaza.

Finally, the Spanish leader argued that European nations must continue upholding a rules-based global order, reinforcing the importance of law and principle in foreign policy decisions.
